Recruitment basics for micro businesses

Need staff for your business?

Ok, so you’re ready to take on a new employee.

Maybe you’re a sole trader and this is your first employee – a huge step for you and your business.

Let’s go through a short checklist of basic essentials:

• Decide what the role will look like – permanent (either full time or part time) or casual?
• Have you created a Position Description? Everybody benefits when you provide a PD for your employee – the employee, you (the employer) and, overall, the business itself. A properly written Position Description provides clarity and structure. It will also form the basis of the prospective employee’s application and the employer’s interview.

Time to advertise the role.

What does your job ad look like? Does it contain the really important details?
o A job title that’s free of jargon – ‘industry standard’ terms are best
o Key selling points for the role? What will the employee do/What’s great about your business?/Why should the want to work for you?
o Be specific with the job summary and please include the salary/wages information
o Be sure to include the location, even if some or all of the role is work-from-home.
o Summarise the duties and the skills and/or experience needed.
o Keep ‘WIIFM” at top of mind – because the candidates certainly will.

Here’s a tip that is very relevant in a tight jobs market, where employees are scarce.

Try changing the advertising, if it’s not working. This applies to a simple sign in your business’ window as well.

Looking for a barista and no one is applying? Try changing the sign to “We have opportunities for new team members right now! Apply (website/email/phone) or come in and have a chat”

And then – select a great ‘people person’ who is enthusiastic and train them to be a barista!

And, if you’ve done all of this right so far…..

…. you’re going to get some applicants.

Time to make sure the interviews are done well.

If you have never conducted a candidate interview for your business or feel uncomfortable or uncertain of how to go about this, you are not alone!
